DCYC – Source of Hope Banners

Sr. Caritas, SOLT, the Diocese of Corpus Christi Youth Ministry Director and a good friend, invited me to create 4 unique banners for the Diocese of Corpus Christi Youth Conference (DCYC), which was held on Sunday, March 2nd, with the theme Source of Hope which is Jesus real presence through the Eucharist. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend but a handful of friends who were in attendance, including Sr. Caritas, sent me photos of the event, where 700 young people were in attendance, adult volunteers/chaperones and the media (see below).

The 4 banners were of thin polyester black cloth panels. It posed as a challenged to paint on so I used a combination of crayon (used to sketch) , sharpies (used for the lettering and definition of the sketch), white gesso (used as a base) and acrylic paints (for detailing). Painting the images was slow-going and layered. Essentially, I painted it 3 times. Thankfully, the results were good.

The goal was they needed to be large and be seen from afar. The banners were used on stage and were backdrops. Mission accomplished with the Holy Spirit!! Thank you, Lord. It was finished with 15 minutes to spare.

Here are the stages of creating these banners – using the St. John banner as the example.
